All ObjectStore documentation is also provided in HTML format.

Last-Minute Information

The following sections provide information about Release 6.2 that is not included in the documentation.

Changes to the osverifydb Utility

The osverifydb utility now offers a fast mode, specified by using the -F option (or setting the OS_OSVERIFYDB_FAST environment variable to true).

The fast mode for osverifydb does not yet work with ObjectStore Java (OSJI) databases.

When the osverifydb utility is run from the command line, the default ObjectStore client cache size will be 256 MB. The normal default cache size is 8 MB. You can override the default cache size by setting the environment variable OS_CACHE_SIZE.

Prefetch Performance

Applications using prefetch and MVCC, including the ObjectStore osverifydb utility, may realize a substantial performance benefit by utilizing information available from the ObjectStore Knowledge Center at http://esupport.progress.com/eservice/esupportobs/consumer/esupport.asp?hotid=C26361.

Changes in Format of Client-Counter Output

The output of client counters that produce timing statistics for measuring ObjectStore performance has been changed to improve readability:

Problems with DDML Examples

Linux
With ObjectStore 6.2 on Linux, the DDML examples ddmlclass, doc_demos/basic, doc_demos/user_def, inherit, and userclass fail to link with an error similar to: undefined reference to 'pthread_atfork'. These examples are found in the directory $OS_ROOTDIR/../ddml/examples.
To work around this problem, modify the respective example makefile to add -lpthread to the list of included libraries.
Solaris SC 8.0
The ddmlclass example ($OS_ROOTDIR/../ddml/examples/ddmlclass) fails to link with the Sun Studio 8 C++ compiler, resulting in the following error:

Undefined               first referenced
 symbol                   in file
os_Collection*osdmClass::getStringConstraints(const char*) load.o
ld: fatal: Symbol referencing errors. No output written to classload
To work around this issue, modify the makefile provided for the example by removing the -pta option from the following line:
    CPPOPTS = -g -KPIC -pta

so that the line reads as follows:

    CPPOPTS = -g -KPIC
This problem will be fixed in a future release of ObjectStore.

Problem with Examples on Solaris SC 8.0

If you are using SC 8.0 with Patch level 113817-08 or higher or SC 7 with patch level 111715-08 or higher, you will need to set the environment variable OS_EDG_EXTRA_OPTIONS to --sun_mode_version==55 in order to build the example files. If you prefer, you can modify the example makefiles to use the -suncc_550 option to the ossg schema generator utility instead of setting the OS_EDG_EXTRA_OPTIONS environment variable.

Problem with JMTL Examples

Setting CLASSPATH
The file jmtl/examples/README.htm contains a section Setting up your Environment that incorrectly lists the name of a jar file in the section on specifying the CLASSPATH environment variable. Instead of <JMTL>/jmtlwl.jar, your CLASSPATH should specify either <JMTL>/jmtlwl70.jar or <JMTL>/jmtlwl81.jar, depending on whether you are using WebLogic server 7.0 or 8.1.
Link to the JMTL User Guide
Some of the readme files for various examples contain broken links to the JMTL User Guide which is part of the OSJI documentation set. You can access the OSJI documentation set by opening $OS_ROOTDIR/doc/JavaDeveloperBookshelf/index.htm in a browser.
Incomplete Information for Travel Example
The README.htm file for the EJB Travel example contains a few errors:

Problem When Using OSJI on HP-UX

When running the Java HotSpot virtual machine version 1.3.1 on HP-UX 32-bit platforms, a rare problem can occur in OSJI with heavily threaded applications under a heavy load. The symptom is that the Java VM takes an unexpected SIGSEGV signal in ObjectStore native code libraries. Ordinarily, this signal is handled by ObjectStore's signal handler. But in the failing condition, the Java VM's signal handler reports the unexpected signal as a fatal error instead of passing it along to ObjectStore's handler. Progress Software is working with Hewlett Packard to determine the cause of this problem.

To avoid this failure, run the Java VM with the -classic command line option to disable the HotSpot VM. This problem does not occur with Java version 1.4.

Problem with jcpp Example on HP-UX 32

As installed, the jcpp example fails to compile on HP-UX 32. You can fix this problem by adding - AA to the CCFLAGS macro in the makefile provided with the example program.

Problem on Linux with JDK 1.4.1

If you are using OSJI on Linux with JDK 1.4.1 or are using a JNI application with OSCI, you need to set LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2.

This is a known bug in JDK 1.4.1 on Linux (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4791798.html). The bug results in attempts to use incompatible versions of the libstdc++ library and causes build failures. The bug has been fixed in JDK 1.4.2.

Lack of support for WebLogic Server on HP-UX and Linux

JMTL support for WebLogic Server 8.1 on HP-UX and versions 7.0 and 8.1 on Linux is unqualified.

Lack of support for WebLogic Server 6.1

In the JMTL User Guide, "Chapter 6: Configuring JMTL" incorrectly states that JMTL supports WebLogic Server 6.1. JTML only supports WebLogic Server 7.0 and 8.1.

Support for Visual Studio .NET 2002

This release of ObjectStore supports Visual Studio .NET 2002. In the documentation, there may be references to Visual C++ 7.0 or Visual Studio .NET. These should be read as references to Visual Studio .NET 2002 only. ObjectStore 6.2 is currently unserviceable for all versions of Visual Studio .NET 2003. Please contact Technical Support if you have further questions on this subject.

Problems with Visual Age 6 Compiler

This section describes the following two problems that can occur when using ObjectStore 6.1.2 on the Visual Age 6 Compiler:

Virtual-Table Declaration Inconsistencies

In the October 2003 PTF of the Visual Age 6 compiler, IBM changed the internally generated declaration for virtual tables. But the 6.2 ObjectStore ossg utility generates the old declaration, which is inconsistent with the new declaration. As a result, when you attempt to compile a schema file generated by ossg, you will see the following error message:

1540-0421 (S) "__vftType __vft21os_virtual_behavior64[2]" is
declared differently than the internally generated declaration
"const __vftType __vft21os_virtual_behavior64[2]".

To fix this problem, you must do one of the following:

Note that this inconsistency only occurs at compile time, not at link time or run time. Also, it does not occur on versions of the Visual Age 6 compiler that are older than the October 2003 PTF.

Allocation-Size Inconsistencies

A regression error was introduced by IBM with the May 2003 PTF. When using ObjectStore 6.2 with that version of the Visual Age 6 C++ compiler, the error can result in schema that assumes an allocation size for certain objects that is inconsistent with the allocation size assumed by the compiler.

Consider the following class Flight:

template
class templated
{
    T foo;
    U bar;
public:
    templated () : foo() {}
};

class Flight
{
private:

    unsigned : 1;

    wchar_t wc; // or anything that is two bytes in size, e.g., short int

    class Nested
    {
        templated foo;
    public:
        Nested() : foo() {}
    };
    Nested array2;

public:
    Flight() {};
    ~Flight() {};
};

Before the May 2003 PTF, the size of the class Flight is 12 bytes, which is the same size assumed by the 6.2 ossg utility. As of the May 2003 PTF, however, the size of the class Flight is 16 bytes. If you attempt to make this class persistent, a run-time error will occur and the following error message will be generated:

An inconsistency was detected during the allocation of an array of
objects of type Flight. The compiler believes the allocation size
should be 16 bytes, while the schema believes it should be 12 bytes.
Verify that the arguments to 'new' match the type and/or array count
of the object being allocated.

This problem only occurs when the following members are specified in the order of their occurrence in the above example:

Until IBM provides a fix for this problem, the workaround is to change the unnamed type to a named type. The following edited version of the class Flight fixes the problem:

class Flight
{
private:

    unsigned bf: 1;

    wchar_t wc;

    class Nested
    {
        templated foo;
    public:
        Nested() : foo() {}
    };
    Nested array2;

public:
    Flight() {};
    ~Flight() {};
};

If you cannot change your code to work around the problem and you need a solution before it is publicly available, contact IBM Technical Support and reference APAR IY52094.

Migrating 6.0 Applications that Use Anonymous enums

If you are migrating a 6.0 application to 6.2 and the application uses anonymous enums, you may have to perform schema evolution. Use the following procedure:

  1. Run the 6.2 version of ossg to generate the new schema for the application.
  2. Run the 6.1.2 version of osscheq against the newly generated schema and the existing database to see if schema evolution is needed.
  3. If schema evolution is needed, run the 6.2 version of ossevol.

For information about ossg, osscheq, and ossevol, see Managing ObjectStore. For information about migrating applications from ObjectStore 6.0 to ObjectStore 6.2.x, see the ObjectStore Migration Guide, which is available on the ObjectStore Documentation Web site.

Restriction on Leading doubles on AIX Platforms

If you are using the latest version of the AIX C++ compiler that is supported by this release of ObjectStore (for example, AIX5) and your application uses the packing pragma to pack a class that contains a double as its first member, ObjectStore will generate schema for the class that assumes a size that differs from the class size produced by the compiler. This discrepancy will result in a run-time error when the application allocates a persistent instance of the class.

AIX5 forces classes that have a double as their first member to have a class size that is a multiple of 8 bytes. But the packing pragma can be used to override this restriction, as in the following example:

#pragma options align=packed
class foo {
public:
    double d;
    int i;
};

In this example, AIX5 will produce instances of foo that are 12 bytes in size. But ObjectStore's schema-generation utility, ossg, will generate schema for foo that incorrectly assumes a size of 16 bytes. This discrepancy will result in a run-time error when the application attempts to allocate a persistent instance of foo.

The workaround is either to remove the pragma (in most cases, not a viable solution) or to order members of the class so that a double is not its first member, as in the following revision of foo:

#pragma options align=packed
class foo {
public:
    int i;
    double d;
};

In this case, ossg will generate schema for the class that agrees with the AIX5 compiler about the alignment (8 bytes) and the size (12 bytes).

This restriction will be lifted in a future release of ObjectStore.

Problems with Inheritance Hierarchies on AIX Platforms

On AIX platforms, there is a known problem with inheritance hierarchies that involve the following:

If your schema appears to contain these characteristics and the ossg schema generator cannot generate schema, contact Technical Support. ossg can also fail to generate schema for inheritance hierarchies of more than two levels of virtual inheritance without repeated instances or virtual functions when neutralizing against the all32 architecture set.

Using the BankServer example

If you are running the CMTL BankServer example on Windows 2003, you may need to alter the Identity settings for the BankServer COM+ Application. Security settings and policy on your local machine may affect which users have the correct identity and privilege to launch certain COM+ Applications.

The instructions.txt file packaged with the BankServer example application incorrectly says to look for BankServerConsole.exe in %BankServerTop%\BankServerConsole\Debug. The file should say to look for the executable in %BankServerTop%\Debug.

Following External Links with the Netscape 4.7 Browser

If you are using the Netscape 4.7 browser to view the ObjectStore documentation and you click on a link to visit an external website, you will not be able to use the WebHelp facility to navigate back to the ObjectStore documentation. To work around this problem, you should right-click on the link and select Open in New Window from the menu.

Documentation Missing for ExtentMapping Class

The documentation for the ExtentMapping class cannot be displayed in the JMTL API Reference because the Javadoc for the class is missing. This class, which was added to the JMTL API for this release, is used to create a cache pool manager programmatically. Note that most JMTL users do not need to use the ExtentMapping class because they create cache pool managers declaratively, using a deployment descriptor.

To obtain the documentation for ExtentMapping, contact Technical Support.

Version Number of ObjectStore Server and Cache Manager on Windows

The Windows control panel (Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services) incorrectly identifies the version number of the ObjectStore server and cache manager as R6.0. The correct version number of both services is R6.2.

   TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR USE, REPRODUCTION, AND DISTRIBUTION

   1. Definitions.

      "License" shall mean the terms and conditions for use, reproduction,
      and distribution as defined by Sections 1 through 9 of this document.

      "Licensor" shall mean the copyright owner or entity authorized by
      the copyright owner that is granting the License.

      "Legal Entity" shall mean the union of the acting entity and all
      other entities that control, are controlled by, or are under common
      control with that entity. For the purposes of this definition,
      "control" means (i) the power, direct or indirect, to cause the
      direction or management of such entity, whether by contract or
      otherwise, or (ii) ownership of fifty percent (50%) or more of the
      outstanding shares, or (iii) beneficial ownership of such entity.

      "You" (or "Your") shall mean an individual or Legal Entity
      exercising permissions granted by this License.

      "Source" form shall mean the preferred form for making modifications,
      including but not limited to software source code, documentation
      source, and configuration files.

      "Object" form shall mean any form resulting from mechanical
      transformation or translation of a Source form, including but
      not limited to compiled object code, generated documentation,
      and conversions to other media types.

      "Work" shall mean the work of authorship, whether in Source or
      Object form, made available under the License, as indicated by a
      copyright notice that is included in or attached to the work
      (an example is provided in the Appendix below).

      "Derivative Works" shall mean any work, whether in Source or Object
      form, that is based on (or derived from) the Work and for which the
      editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications
      represent, as a whole, an original work of authorship. For the purposes
      of this License, Derivative Works shall not include works that remain
      separable from, or merely link (or bind by name) to the interfaces of,
      the Work and Derivative Works thereof.

      "Contribution" shall mean any work of authorship, including
      the original version of the Work and any modifications or additions
      to that Work or Derivative Works thereof, that is intentionally
      submitted to Licensor for inclusion in the Work by the copyright owner
      or by an individual or Legal Entity authorized to submit on behalf of
      the copyright owner. For the purposes of this definition, "submitted"
      means any form of electronic, verbal, or written communication sent
      to the Licensor or its representatives, including but not limited to
      communication on electronic mailing lists, source code control systems,
      and issue tracking systems that are managed by, or on behalf of, the
      Licensor for the purpose of discussing and improving the Work, but
      excluding communication that is conspicuously marked or otherwise
      designated in writing by the copyright owner as "Not a Contribution."

      "Contributor" shall mean Licensor and any individual or Legal Entity
      on behalf of whom a Contribution has been received by Licensor and
      subsequently incorporated within the Work.

   2. Grant of Copyright License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
      this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
      worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
      copyright license to reproduce, prepare Derivative Works of,
      publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense, and distribute the
      Work and such Derivative Works in Source or Object form.

   3. Grant of Patent License. Subject to the terms and conditions of
      this License, each Contributor hereby grants to You a perpetual,
      worldwide, non-exclusive, no-charge, royalty-free, irrevocable
      (except as stated in this section) patent license to make, have made,
      use, offer to sell, sell, import, and otherwise transfer the Work,
      where such license applies only to those patent claims licensable
      by such Contributor that are necessarily infringed by their
      Contribution(s) alone or by combination of their Contribution(s)
      with the Work to which such Contribution(s) was submitted. If You
      institute patent litigation against any entity (including a
      cross-claim or counterclaim in a lawsuit) alleging that the Work
      or a Contribution incorporated within the Work constitutes direct
      or contributory patent infringement, then any patent licenses
      granted to You under this License for that Work shall terminate
      as of the date such litigation is filed.

   4. Redistribution. You may reproduce and distribute copies of the
      Work or Derivative Works thereof in any medium, with or without
      modifications, and in Source or Object form, provided that You
      meet the following conditions:

      (a) You must give any other recipients of the Work or
          Derivative Works a copy of this License; and

      (b) You must cause any modified files to carry prominent notices
          stating that You changed the files; and

      (c) You must retain, in the Source form of any Derivative Works
          that You distribute, all copyright, patent, trademark, and
          attribution notices from the Source form of the Work,
          excluding those notices that do not pertain to any part of
          the Derivative Works; and

      (d) If the Work includes a "NOTICE" text file as part of its
          distribution, then any Derivative Works that You distribute must
          include a readable copy of the attribution notices contained
          within such NOTICE file, excluding those notices that do not
          pertain to any part of the Derivative Works, in at least one
          of the following places: within a NOTICE text file distributed
          as part of the Derivative Works; within the Source form or
          documentation, if provided along with the Derivative Works; or,
          within a display generated by the Derivative Works, if and
          wherever such third-party notices normally appear. The contents
          of the NOTICE file are for informational purposes only and
          do not modify the License. You may add Your own attribution
          notices within Derivative Works that You distribute, alongside
          or as an addendum to the NOTICE text from the Work, provided
          that such additional attribution notices cannot be construed
          as modifying the License.

      You may add Your own copyright statement to Your modifications and
      may provide additional or different license terms and conditions
      for use, reproduction, or distribution of Your modifications, or
      for any such Derivative Works as a whole, provided Your use,
      reproduction, and distribution of the Work otherwise complies with
      the conditions stated in this License.

   5. Submission of Contributions. Unless You explicitly state otherwise,
      any Contribution intentionally submitted for inclusion in the Work
      by You to the Licensor shall be under the terms and conditions of
      this License, without any additional terms or conditions.
      Notwithstanding the above, nothing herein shall supersede or modify
      the terms of any separate license agreement you may have executed
      with Licensor regarding such Contributions.

   6. Trademarks. This License does not grant permission to use the trade
      names, trademarks, service marks, or product names of the Licensor,
      except as required for reasonable and customary use in describing the
      origin of the Work and reproducing the content of the NOTICE file.

   7. Disclaimer of Warranty. Unless required by applicable law or
      agreed to in writing, Licensor provides the Work (and each
      Contributor provides its Contributions) on an "AS IS" BASIS,
      WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, either express or
      implied, including, without limitation, any warranties or conditions
      of TITLE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, MERCHANTABILITY, or FITNESS FOR A
      PARTICULAR PURPOSE. You are solely responsible for determining the
      appropriateness of using or redistributing the Work and assume any
      risks associated with Your exercise of permissions under this License.

   8. Limitation of Liability. In no event and under no legal theory,
      whether in tort (including negligence), contract, or otherwise,
      unless required by applicable law (such as deliberate and grossly
      negligent acts) or agreed to in writing, shall any Contributor be
      liable to You for damages, including any direct, indirect, special,
      incidental, or consequential damages of any character arising as a
      result of this License or out of the use or inability to use the
      Work (including but not limited to damages for loss of goodwill,
      work stoppage, computer failure or malfunction, or any and all
      other commercial damages or losses), even if such Contributor
      has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

   9. Accepting Warranty or Additional Liability. While redistributing
      the Work or Derivative Works thereof, You may choose to offer,
      and charge a fee for, acceptance of support, warranty, indemnity,
      or other liability obligations and/or rights consistent with this
      License. However, in accepting such obligations, You may act only
      on Your own behalf and on Your sole responsibility, not on behalf
      of any other Contributor, and only if You agree to indemnify,
      defend, and hold each Contributor harmless for any liability
      incurred by, or claims asserted against, such Contributor by reason
      of your accepting any such warranty or additional liability.

   END OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS
