General Information and Usage Notes
Overview of OPE components
OPE is a set of tools designed to help ObjectStore users obtain the best performance for their ObjectStore applications and Servers. It has the following major components:
- OPE Retriever - A set of libraries that are automatically loaded by the ObjectStore client on behalf of an ObjectStore application. It transparently records performance information into an OPE trace file. The Retriever is available for all ObjectStore R4.0 and higher configurations.
- OPE Analyzer (osopea) - An interactive tool that processes an OPE trace file, producing a performance database that can then be examined graphically to view the application's performance characteristics. The Analyzer can process trace files produced by a Retriever on any platform.
- OPE Formatting Utility (osopef) - A batch-mode convenience utility that can preprocess an OPE trace file, producing a performance database for use by the Analyzer. It can process trace files produced by a Retriever on any platform.
- OPE Server Monitor (osopes) - An interactive tool that monitors, in real time, the performance characteristics of ObjectStore Servers.
- OPE Online Help Facility - An interactive help facility accessible from within the OPE Analyzer or Server Monitor, via the HELP menu, or as the stand-alone utility osopehelp on UNIX and Help icons in the OPE Program Group on Windows NT. See the Guide to Documentation for more information.
- OPE Version Utility (osopeversion; osopever on Windows NT or Windows 98) - Displays the current version of OPE. This is useful when you are reporting problems.
ObjectStore run time bundled with OPE
On Windows NT or Windows 98, this version of OPE also includes an ObjectStore / Single R6.0 version. You can use this version with the OPE Analyzer to handle local trace files and performance databases.
How to use ObjectStore / Single with OPE is described in the OPE User Guide.
Required environment variables
OPE requires that certain environment variables be set before operation. A brief overview of these variables can be found in the OPE Installation and Configuration Guide, along with related information. The OPE User Guide provides a complete description. Refer to these documents before using the product.
